Technical Meeting ‘Harmonization of protocols for movement of Plant Germplasm across the Region’

An essential factor in increasing productivity and building resilience in food production systems in the Caribbean is access and ability to move improved plant and animal germplasm from both indigenous and imported sources, across the region. However, such unregulated movement carries potential risks to countries agricultural health systems. In this regard, a study on ‘Harmonization of protocols for movement of Plant Germplasm across the Region’, undertaken through APP Component 2 (C2), offers recommendations to modernize existing rules and regulations concerning trade in plant material for easier movement while, at the same time, maintaining the lowest level of risk with respect to the transfer of plant pests and diseases within CARIForum.

The Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI), Technical Leader of APP C2, in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) - Animal & Plant Heath Inspection Service (APHIS) will host a one-day meeting for members of the Caribbean Plant Health Directors’ (CPHD) Forum, to review the findings and recommendations and agree on follow-up actions required towards achieving a harmonised framework for movement of plant germplasm across the region. This will greatly enable CARDI to deliver on its mandate of strengthening capacity to acquire and manage quality, disease-free plant germplasm for enhanced food and nutrition security in the region.
